Originally filmed in South Africa, CBS/Fox Video (the 20th Century Fox home video label of the 1980's and 1990's) released "The Gods Must Be Crazy" on Laserdisc in 1987 after a successful international release.
Like the lead character, Xi, the actor portraying him, named N!Xau (pronounced En *click* ow) was a real Bushman who, according to the Laserdisc jacket, before the making of this film had seen only two white people and one vehicle. And, like Xi, the biggest problem for the filmmakers was how to pay N!Xau, who (again, as the story goes from the Laserdisc jacket) had no concept of "work" or "money."
